Dr. Joseph Torbey was elected President of the Maronite League following March 25, 2007 elections, in which participated Members of the League, who are among the most eminent Maronites of the country. The atmosphere of the elections was characterized as being highly competitive and democratic. Dr. Torbey won the League's Presidency by 378 votes to 200, while H.E. Mr. Abdallah Abou Habib was elected Vice-President by 353 votes to 217 to rival General Antoine Barakat. The Agreement and Modernization List headed by Dr. Joseph Torbey held a wide lead over the competitor list. After the elections' results were announced, Former Minister and President of the League, H.E. Mr. Michel Eddeh congratulated Dr. Torbey and all his list-Members, concluding his message by emphasizing his satisfaction as to the way the elections were run, wishing the new Executive Board Members continuous success in achieving their goals.
