BEIRUT: Joseph Torbey, chairman of the World Union Of Arab Bankers, voiced his support Tuesday for the extension of the terms of the Banking Control Commission members, praising their efforts to supervise the activities of the banks over the past few years. Torbey made the remarks during a lunch hosted by him in honor of the commission members.
“Honoring the members of the commission is like honoring the Lebanese banking sector,” he said.
He expressed hope that the term of the members of the commission would be extended so they can continue to perform their duties and protect the Lebanese banking sector.
The Cabinet has not included the BCC term extension in its agenda yet.
But there are indications that most ministers will eventually support extending the terms of the existing members to avoid a confrontation among the ministers over the new names.
